ARTURO ETA CLEMENTINA

“Arturo and Clementina” is about a couple of

tortoises, who fall in love in a very short time,

and they start to live together. In the beginning,

the relation is perfect but when Clementina

starts to make plans saying she would be very

happy to go to Venetia or to learn to play an

instrument, immediately Arturo disillusions her,

and he makes her believe that she wouldn´t be

able to do what she dreamed.

Suddenly, Arturo starts to feel guilty about

the sadness of his wife and he starts to give

presents to her tying all of them on her back,

until Clementina can’t almost move and walk.

As she is not autonomous because of the

weight she carries, Arturo must feed her. And

that makes him feel better saying sentences like:

“what would you do without me!” and Clementina

agrees.

One day, while Arturo is fishing Clementina

decides to go for a walk and she spends a very good time. By that day, Clementina starts going for a walk every day as a custom; in this situation, Arturo is more and more astonished with the happiness of his couple. One day, when Arturo comes back of fishing… he only finds the shell and all the presents, but Clementina is not there.

Why have I decided to work on a story?

I think that listening to a language isn't enough to learn it because people, during our life, sometimes watch ourselves involved in several different real situations we must solve or we must know at least refusing them to defend our well- being. It’s because of that, we have to translate real situations into the classrooms, only in that way we will be able to grow up competent children.

But that was very difficult for me, because I didn’t know the students until I went there on December 15th. So I didn´t know their motivations, their interests, their attitudes and aptitudes and I knew nothing about their life outside the school. Besides, I am convinced that those real situations that, I have spoken about before, happen spontaneously, and a person, (external to the school) who, in this case, is me and what I did with them in two hours, cannot have much impact on them.

Bearing in mind all that, it is very difficult to prepare a class for a group of students who you don’t really know; so, as you can watch in the recordings, I tried to choose a familiar, controversial and nearby topic and to  make the class as active as possible, lending them to speak and participate. My intention was not to speak during an hour, because I know that they wouldn´t pay attention to me, so the majority of the time we were in silence, they were watching a video on “youtube”.

Why have I decided to mix it with a current social problem?

Many times we say that students are the future of our society, but I don’t agree at all. I also think that children are the present and I think that we don`t really notice it. Sometimes, we don’t tell them all the truth, arguing that it would be very hard; but that is the reality and I think that young children must know it, due to change the current situation. Exactly! I am referring to the violence against women. In conclusion, we cannot protect them and hide the truth, because they are not blind and deaf and if we don’t tell them the truth, someone else will do it.

But… why is the society so bad? What are the reasons? That is what I want to teach to them.  I am sure that the reasons are uncountable and we have arrived to this situation because we have been doing badly a lot of things during a long- long time. So I have centred in what I consider one of the reasons: traditional stories.

In this aspect, I defend the argument that the values that “Disney” traditional stories transmit are not beneficial for children. In most cases, women are submissive, they need a husband to be happy and when they are sad, it is enough with a kiss to solve their problems. Those stories make women feel less than men, and they have created an enormous dependency.

In addition, traditional stories have become beauty and care in an innate characteristic of females. But I am not going into detail about that, because it is not my aim in this work.

Why did I give the class in Basque?

On the one hand, when I chose the topic, I decided that it was too difficult to explain it in English. That is a reason why I gave the class in Basque. I also thought that it would have more impact in the students and it would be more meaningful if I spoke their mother tongue.

On the other hand, I did also choose Basque for my comfort. I thought that I would be nervous enough in class speaking in Basque, I didn`t want to add more motives to be nervous. It is true that I could consider it as a challenge, but I preferred to leave it for hereinafter.
