LESSON PLAN
I gave the class in Armentia
Ikastola on December 15th
but, as I have said in the
welcome letter, that was only the last
step. Before that day, I had
prepared the proposal, I had
changed it several times, I had got a
lot of doubts, I had been nervous…
First of all, I had to decide what
exercise I was going to do, and I
started remembering my previous
knowledge; this course I am trying
to pass two subjects: one of them
is this, how to take advantage of new
technologies in language classes,
and the otherone is about how to
teach languages based on textual
kinds: explaining, telling (real stories),
giving instructions, arguing and
storytelling (invented stories). And, in that moment, I remembered what Recio (nd) recommended us in his article: "animation and sounds effects enhance the learning". So I got the first idea: we could watch a story on the net in order to work on literacy skills (writing, listening, reading and speaking).
Secondly, when I was planning the lesson, I heart in the radio that a man had murdered his wife and his two daughters. In that moment I got furious and I thought that I must do something, and the best I could do was to try changing the mentality of the kids, and future adults. So I decided to mix those two objectives: a story’s structure and equality between men and women.
Thirdly, once I decided the topic, I had to concrete the essay. In the beginning, my intention was to change the message of a traditional story as Pocahontas, Cinderella or Shrek, because I wanted to go to the centre, or to one of the causes of this social problem, and I think that infant books are one of the reasons of the inequality between men and women. Before changing the message of a traditional story, students and I would watch on the net the traditional version of “snow- white” and the new one (both of them in youtube). Then, we would compare and discuss about them. But I thought that it was going to take too much time and that it could be a bit boring, so in order to maintain students encouraged I made the decision of changing the first proposal.
Nevertheless, I knew that I wanted to change something but I didn`t know how. After thinking a long time, I had the appointment to attend to a contact class with Peio Añorga. And there, by chance, I got an idea. He showed us a lot of infant books and one of them (which is called Arturo eta Clementina) was about the topic I wanted to carry out. Besides, the structure of that book is very clear and, if this wasn’t enough, I found out it uploaded in “slideshare”.
(There is more information about this book in "Analysis of the content" section.)
Lastly, I kept the first part of the plan. We watched the two versions of a traditional book in youtube; but in the second part, instead of rewriting the whole story, the students were asked to complete the ending of “Arturo and Clementina”, after that we read it in loud voice. I did also prepare two exercises in “educaplay” to work on the vocabulary about female and male rights, just in case we didn’t run out of all the time. In that case, I would give them the link and the possibility to do the exercises at home.
Here it is attached the finished lesson plan I did before the class:
